Did you know that May is Employee Health & Fitness Month? What better time than now, right before summer kicks off, to learn some easy ways to be a happier, healthier you? Here are my four simple yet effective tips for getting in great shape and optimal health right from your own desk:
- Get moving! In the weeks between March 15th-August 15th when my personal training appointments, boxing and fitness classes slow down, I make a point to get up every hour during my eight hour day (if time permits) and walk back and forth across campus, followed by 50 push-ups. That’s close to 400 push-ups a day! But you don’t have to do 50 push-ups. How about five? 10? What matters is that you do your best to get out of your chair and get your blood flowing. It's healthier than having a Frappuccino or raiding the vending machine for a quick unhealthy snack that will make your energy crash 30 minutes after you eat it.
- Keep moving! Have you heard of the ? It’s a simple circuit that can be done anywhere, by anyone. Whether you decide to give that a try or simply go for a brisk walk on your lunch hour, the key is to just move, no matter what the exercise may be. Our bodies were not made to sit and think all day. I know some of you may be saying to yourselves, “It's easy for him since that is his occupation.” Well, that's not true. Long before I became a fitness professional, I began practicing living a healthy lifestyle. Take care of your body—you only get one life, and good health is what will keep you going for many years.
- Stand up and stretch. It seems like every day, a new study is published about the negative effects of sitting for long periods of time. So, while I am at my desk, I make it a point to stand up and stretch throughout the day. There are many seated stretches you could get online, like . If you want other ideas, please don't hesitate to email me. I’d be happy to discuss your specific situation and give you some personalized suggestions.
- Drink water. Water is crucial no matter what the season, so I try to drink close to my body weight in ounces. The average person should aim for six to eight 8-ounce glasses per day. It's not as hard to do as some might think! Add a squeeze of citrus or some fresh mint if you need a little flavor to encourage you to keep drinking.
Remember, something is better than nothing, be it exercise or drinking water. The biggest falsehood is when people say they don't have time. If you have time in your day to read this, you have time to get up and move! Please make time for you—you’re the only you that you've got! Stay healthy.
